We are delighted to work with Fairytale Farm, who offer our students fabulous work-based learning placements.

The Laister family, headed by their eldest daughter Olivia who has cerebral palsy, established Fairytale Farm 10 years ago as a response to the lack of accessible visitor attractions for disabled children in the UK. Adel Mortimor, the centre manager, has been very generous in allowing students from LVS Oxford to experience the benefits of working at the farm.

Gayle Fox, the Careers & Guidance Officer at LVS, and Adele, the Manager at Fairytale Farm, worked together to help students prepare their CVs and go through the interview process for placement at Fairytale Farm.

Adele shared her enthusiasm for the collaboration between Fairytale Farm and LVS Oxford, noting how pleased she was with the response of the students and the skills they have gained. She expressed her hope that the two organisations would continue their successful partnership.

Vice Principal Mel Waller of LVS explained the importance of giving students a chance to gain on-the-job experience. She expressed her appreciation to the staff at Fairytale Farm and Blenheim for enabling their students to have such opportunities to learn and grow within a work environment. She further mentioned that these experiences make the students more confident, equipped with the necessary skills to work in any organisation.

What kind of job training are our students engaging in?

Our students can help with a variety of tasks such as taking care of the grounds, like the beautiful sensory garden or fairytale walk, and interacting with the wide variety of animals, including Shetland ponies, alpacas, donkeys, goats, guinea pigs, and chickens. Through these tasks, they will gain valuable workplace skills like adapting to workplace culture, improving communication and listening skills, honing social interaction and interpersonal abilities, developing self-discipline, managing time, and working with others.

What are the benefits of our students having work experience?

Poppy’s experience in the Upper School curriculum has been instrumental in helping her to decide which career path to take. She has been able to gain insight into what employers look for in potential employees and has been researching college courses related to her passion for working with animals. This has enabled her to make an informed decision about what she would like to pursue after leaving LVS Oxford.

We take pride in enabling our students to gain the skills and self-assurance they need to grow into independent individuals through our meaningful experiences.
