LVS Oxford Smashes Egg Appeal
– School’s donation expands the reach of Shipton Hub’s Easter Egg Appeal –
29 March 2021 – Local food bank, Shipton Hub, has been able to expand the reach of its Easter Egg appeal thanks to the generosity of students at LVS Oxford, an independent school in Begbroke for young people with autism.
The team at Helen and Douglas House Hospice originally approached Shipton Hub Food Bank and asked if it could help provide a 100 Easter eggs for the terminally ill children in their care. The appeal went out and the students at LVS Oxford responded, smashing the target and donating over 250 eggs. As a result, the Hub was able to extend the reach of the donation to include the Be Free Young Carers, which supports young carers aged 8-18, as well as ensuring all the children at the Hospice receive an egg this Easter.
Shipton Hub started at the beginning of lockdown and now works almost exclusively on tackling food poverty in the local area. Since the start of this year, the initiative has introduced a Calendar of Kindness, with a focus on a different charity each month.
Commenting on the school’s response, LVS Oxford Year 7 tutor, Amanda Porter, said; “As a specialist school, LVS Oxford has smaller class sizes and a total of just 70 students, so we were overwhelmed by the response and generosity from pupils, parents and staff as hundreds of eggs and chocolate treats were brought in. Getting involved in the Appeal helps the children to learn about the work of Shipton Hub and enjoy the experience of helping and giving.”
Shipton Hub founder, Brenda Gratwicke, added; “The response from the whole community to this appeal, and to the food bank in general, have been fantastic, but the response from LVS Oxford really was amazing. The students donated more eggs than I thought to ever see in one go from donations, and more importantly, it’s enough to bring smiles to hundreds of children. We are absolutely amazed by their kindness and generosity and cannot thank them enough.”
